Health and Fitness for the Percussionist

This is sponsored by Steve Weiss Music!

A great workshop for percussionists to learn about how to keep their hands and back in working order.

Al Lyman is a great Florida percussionist as well as a fitness expert.

Tickets are 5 dollars. You can purchase them here.

Where: Temple University, Presser Hall Room 25 (Basement)

Coach Al Lyman is an active and multifaceted percussionist with an extensive background in many genres of music. He’s entering his 3rd season with the Venice Symphony after moving to Florida with his partner Terry, in 2016. After surprisingly winning an audition in 1979 at the young age of 19, Al became a member of the United States Coast Guard Band, one of the five “Premier” service bands in the United States. He retired in 2007 after an illustrious 28-year career during which he traveled around the U.S. and internationally, performing thousands of concerts, many as a featured xylophone soloist. However, his newest goals in music revolve around the vibraphone!

Also known as “Coach Al,” he is also the owner/co-founder of Pursuit Athletic Performance, an internationally recognized endurance sports coaching company and gait-analysis laboratory. Al would best describe himself simply as a "human movement specialist." His passion is helping people from every walk of life, to live in good health and age gracefully.

Besides being certified by USA Triathlon, USA Cycling and the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, Al is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the NSCA, a certified Fascial Stretch Therapist with Stretch To Win, a certified Functional Range Mobility Specialist with FRC, a certified Functional Movement Screen provider with FMS, a certified Barefoot Training Specialist with EBFA, a certified Hardstyle Kettlebell instructor with Dragon Door, and is certified in clinical gait analysis with Medical Motion, a subsidiary of Sports Motion, Inc.

Among the highlights of an almost 40-year career as an endurance athlete is his personal best of 2:39:37 at the Boston Marathon. Al is also a 9-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, including three finishes at the prestigious Ironman World Championships in KailuaKona, Hawaii.

Steve Weiss Mallet Festival
to Aug 9

Steve Weiss Mallet Festival

The Steve Weiss Mallet Festival features some of the top mallet players in the world. The festival is dedicated to the memory of Steve Weiss the founder of Steve Weiss Percussion. Steve Weiss is the biggest percussion distributor in the world, and while Steve was alive he helped many of us buy percussion equipment by selling at the best prices in the world. And he was supportive of our work and efforts at percussionists. I had a friendship with Steve that lasted from 1979 until his death in 2014. I’m honored to be able to put this festival on in his memory.

Vibes Workshop in Ireland (David Friedman - Tony Miceli) - Peter Dee Academy - Limerick, Ireland

Any questions? Email me

Limerick, Ireland is a great place for a workshop. It’s inexpense and there’s plenty to do. Our Ireland workshop is a week of hard work! We bring in a few vibraphones for you to practice on. Also in the evening there’s a jazz ensemble class for all instruments. 2 vibe players can also sign up for that class. It’s a great chance to play with other musicians and gain some experience there.

During the day we bring in a bass player for some of the classes so we can talk about playing with bass and drums. The rest of the time we will work on all aspects of playing the vibes. Including dampening, pedaling, technique, grips, improv, chord studies, voicings, learning tunes and a lot more topics!

There are plenty of BnB’s to stay at as well as the Limerick City Hotel which people have been staying at for the workshops for about 10+ years!

The bootcamp is an opportunity to get a lot of information in a short time. It’s a chance to go home with a lot of things to work on and to think about. That gives you the opportunity to then work hard on all this material and improve as a vibe player or bass player!

This year we’re adding a bass bootcamp to the vibes bootcamp. We will schedule some time where we’re all together and can work and play.
